A domain name is your website’s URL (http://www.example.com). When choosing your domain name, ideally you will choose one that incorporates your keywords. For example, this website is about learning to master SEO like a Pro. If you look at my domain name, you will see that “seolikeapro” is indeed in there. In this case, it is followed by .wordpress.com because the actual domain name seolikapro.com was not available when I first decided to start this blog.
You may run into the same problem. At that point, you will decide if you want to use a different domain name or, like me, you may decide that it’s the one most fitting to who you are or what you do and end up making adjustments. Perhaps you will go with a .org instead of .com. Perhaps you’ll use a service like WordPress or Blogger if you decide your website is closer to a blog than it is to an ecommerce website. Whichever way you choose to go, the one thing you’ll want to be sure of is your domain name. You’re going to have that name for as long as your website is online so pick one you won’t wish you could change later on.

When implementing a search engine optimization strategy, keyword research should be your very first step. There are a lot of free tools available online to help with this process but probably the most popular one is Google Adwords.
Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind:
- Always look at a keyword’s competition and not just the number of searches. This will help you decide which keywords are best.
- Think like the visitors you’re targeting. If they were looking for an Italian Restaurant in Boston, would they search “Boston Trattoria”? Probably not. They would be more likely to search simply, “Italian Restaurant Boston”, or “Boston Italian Restaurants”.
- Google offers a keyword tool for a reason. Be sure to use it.
- Try to think locally. If you are a small business owner, chances are your main customers are local customers. Use keywords that target them.
Researching keywords is the very first and most important step to search engine optimization. You’ll later use the keywords you’ve chosen in your meta tags, your content, your blog posts, and in various places across the internet. Be sure to take your time and choose wisely.

The title tag is an important part of on-site search engine optimization. What you write in the title tag is what people will see at the top of your website page. In your html code, the title tag will look like this <title></title>. Between those tags is where you will place your title.
Your title tag should be no more than 65 characters in length and should utilize your keywords. Always remember to research your keywords using a tool like Google Adwords keyword tool.
